Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived danger. It is characterized by feelings of worry, fear, or nervousness, often about future events or uncertain situations. While occasional anxiety is normal and even helpful in certain situations (like preparing for a big test or avoiding danger), excessive or persistent anxiety can interfere with daily life.

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Racing thoughts or excessive worry

  • Restlessness or feeling on edge

  • Rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath

  • Trouble concentrating

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Muscle tension

When anxiety becomes chronic or overwhelming, it may be classified as an anxiety disorder, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, or social anxiety disorder. Managing anxiety can involve lifestyle changes, therapy, relaxation techniques, and, in some cases, medication.
